Osagoe Minkaen is an open-air museum located in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. This site features five reconstructed and relocated traditional houses belonging to wealthy farmers and village leaders (shoya) from around the 18th century, along with earthen storehouses (dozo), ash sheds, and even traditional toilets (kawaya). Inside each building, you will find authentic furniture and daily-use tools, recreating the atmosphere of life in old Japan. A major highlight is the ability to freely enter these structures to experience the spatial layout and lifestyle of the past firsthand.
The structures on display were once the residences of influential figures in the local community of Fukui. These buildings reflect the architectural styles of the 18th century and serve as vital records of the region's historical way of life. As the site consists of wooden traditional houses, you will encounter uneven floors, tatami mats, and earthen floors (doma). We recommend wearing comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off. To protect the precious historical buildings and artifacts, please follow all museum etiquette.
