Fukuhara Sanso is a prestigious mountain villa located in Shikaoi, Kato District, Hokkaido. This estate is characterized by its vast 8.5-hectare grounds, where a meticulously maintained garden harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding natural environment. The landscape is designed with waterfalls and ponds strategically placed along walking paths, allowing visitors to feel the profound transitions of the seasons.
To preserve the pristine natural beauty and showcase the seasonal splendor of the region, the villa is opened to the public only during a limited window from mid-September to mid-October. This period coincides with the peak of the autumn foliage. It is a rare and precious spot that preserves a traditional garden style that lives in complete harmony with the wilder natural environment of Hokkaido.
The garden utilizes the natural topography of the land to create a breathtaking landscape. Key features include flowing waterfalls and serene, still ponds that blend seamlessly with the surrounding forest and trees. As you wander along the designated walking paths, you will experience a beautiful tapestry of water and greenery that changes with the light and the season.
Please note that Fukuhara Sanso is not open year-round. It is open exclusively during the autumn foliage season, from mid-September to mid-October. This is the most vibrant time to visit, as the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold, making the waterfalls and ponds look spectacular. We recommend visiting during daylight hours (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM) to fully appreciate the scenery under natural light.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the well-maintained walking paths that wind through the heart of nature. The experience is centered around observing the interplay between the water elements—such as the waterfalls and ponds—and the seasonal foliage. The Shikaoi area is rich in facilities related to nature and local cuisine. Nearby, you can find the Michi-no-Eki Shikaoi (Roadside Station) for breaks and local products, as well as various spots themed around the region's natural environment. There are also local accommodations and cultural sites, such as art museums, that allow you to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Since the villa is set in a natural, rugged environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please be mindful of your footing while exploring the paths.
