The Fukuchiyama Line Abandoned Railway Track is a popular 4.7km hiking course located along the scenic Muko River valley. This path offers a unique atmosphere where the remnants of human history—such as original railway rails and wooden sleepers—blend seamlessly into the natural landscape. As you walk, you will encounter a striking contrast between the industrial past and the raw power of nature, characterized by dramatic bridges, rushing river rapids, and steep, rugged mountains.
This route was once a functioning railway line. Today, it has been repurposed into a lush, natural hiking trail. The presence of the original rails and sleepers serves as a living museum, allowing visitors to feel the passage of time. While access to certain parts of this area was once restricted, it is now open to the public, providing a rare opportunity to experience both industrial heritage and untouched nature simultaneously.

The course is filled with visually stunning elements. First, the dynamic landscape of the Muko River valley offers breathtaking views of rushing waters and jagged rock formations. The trail also features six tunnels and three bridges, providing a sense of depth and changing terrain as you move through the area. The sections where the rails and sleepers are still visible are particularly special, telling the story of the former railway. Exploring the tunnels provides a thrilling experience of moving through darkened, cavernous spaces.
The area is a perfect spot to enjoy the changing seasons, as the colors of the valley and the surrounding vegetation shift beautifully throughout the year. Please note that there is no artificial lighting along the path. For safety reasons, it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours. Additionally, please refrain from hiking during bad weather to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

The primary activity is hiking. As you traverse the 4.7km course, you can observe the fascinating coexistence of railway relics and natural beauty. To fully enjoy the experience of walking through the tunnels, we strongly recommend bringing a flashlight, as these sections can be quite dark. The terrain changes frequently, offering a rewarding physical experience for nature lovers.
Convenient access points for the start of your hike are located near the nearby stations. Both Ikuna Station and Takedao Station have facilities in their vicinity for resting or grabbing supplies. However, please be aware that there are no restrooms or shops directly on the hiking course, so it is essential to prepare everything before you begin your trek.
Proper preparation is key to a successful hike. Since the terrain can be uneven and natural, please wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. Because the tunnels lack lighting, a flashlight is an absolute necessity. You should also bring your own water and snacks, as there are no vending machines or shops along the route. For safety, avoid hiking at night or during inclement weather. As this is a natural area, please respect the environment and maintain proper hiking etiquette.
