Fukuchi Valley is a stunning natural landscape located within the Unzen-Hiko Prefectural Natural Park in Shiso, Hyogo Prefecture. Characterized by its abundant water flow and massive rock formations that loom over the banks, it has been selected as one of the '100 Best Sceneries of Kansai' and '100 Best Sceneries of Hyogo.' This deep mountain terrain offers a different face to visitors throughout the year. You can witness the fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing coolness of summer, the vibrant colors of autumn, and the serene, white landscapes of winter.
The area has long been celebrated for its natural artistry. The famous author Seiko Tanabe once described the nearby scenery in her book, noting how the clear stream bites into the rocks, scattering spray amidst lush greenery and crisp air. The region is also a place where nature and history harmonize, with historical sites like Mikata Shrine (whose main hall is a National Important Cultural Property) and Iwa Shrine—one of the three great shrines of Harima—dotted throughout the surrounding area.
The most striking feature of Fukuchi Valley is its dynamic landscape. The contrast between the towering cliffs and the rushing water is truly awe-inspiring. Other notable features include the famous 'Monju Water,' a bell that announces good fortune, and a suspension bridge that blends seamlessly into the scenery. Visitors should also look out for unique natural formations like the 'Kayanoki' tree and the distinctive 'Donbiki Rock.'
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring (April–May) brings lush, fresh greenery, while Summer (June–August) is the perfect time to enjoy the cooling effects of the water. Autumn (September–November) offers breathtaking foliage, and Winter (December–March) reveals a quiet, snow-covered valley. During the summer months, the area is well-equipped for visitors looking to enjoy the water through BBQ and day camping.
The area offers various facilities for enjoying the great outdoors. At MONJUNO FUKUCHI, you can experience camping, dining at the cafe/restaurant, or browsing local goods. For a more casual visit, you can enjoy day camping or relaxing by the river. Depending on the season, you can also enjoy shopping at the Fukuchi Fureai Market or hosting a BBQ. These activities provide a deep, hands-on connection with the natural environment.
There are many spots nearby to explore within the Unzen-Hiko Prefectural Natural Park, such as Mineyama Kogen, Kuroiwa Falls, Henmyo Falls, Ounen Falls, and Ota Pond. For those interested in history, the Ikuno Silver Mine and its historic streets, as well as Iwa Shrine (just a 15-minute drive away), are excellent additions to your itinerary.
