Fukasawa-ke Jutaku is a designated Important Cultural Property located in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture. It is renowned as a merchant residence that thrived through the trade of goods along the Nakasendo, a major historical highway, starting from the mid-Edo period. The residence is characterized by its massive scale and a unique facade where the second-floor lattice windows are prominently extended outward using a double-beam structure. This architectural style serves as a vital visual record of the advanced construction techniques used by merchants of that era.
The main building of this residence was constructed around 1854 (the 7th year of the Kaei era). As a structure from the late Edo period, it serves as an invaluable historical resource that illustrates how merchants lived and conducted business during that time. The residence is officially designated as a cultural property due to its significant role in representing the merchant culture of the Niekawa-shuku post town.
The most striking feature is its unique exterior design. The "dashibari" (protruding beam) structure, used to support the second-floor lattice windows, gives the front of the building a powerful and distinctive expression.
