The Seiji Chujo Art Museum is a dedicated space for the works of Seiji Chujo, a world-renowned master of shadow art. Situated in the tranquil Nasu Highlands of Tochigi Prefecture, the museum houses approximately 150 pieces that express the brilliance of life and the essence of prayer through the dramatic contrast of light and shadow. This is not a conventional museum for passive viewing; it is a "theater-style" experience where the art changes expression depending on your viewing angle and the shifting light. The architecture blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature, offering a one-of-a-kind space that embodies Chujo's philosophy of the "World of Light."
The museum was completed in 2013 in the Nasu Highlands. Part of the facility utilizes a renovated space from the former Niki Museum, and the grounds even feature a historic Nagayamon (traditional gate) from the Meiji era. The collection represents the culmination of Chojo's lifelong pursuit of the art of light and shadow. His philosophy—to deliver the "joy of living" and the "prayer of light" to people through shadow art—is deeply embedded in the museum's design and exhibition structure. The space, where nature, art, and historical architecture unite, is a physical manifestation of Chujo's artistic vision.
The most iconic spot is the "Chapel," where stained glass designed by Chujo glows beautifully. As light filters through, it creates a vibrant, colorful space that transports visitors to a dreamlike realm. Another must-see is the large-scale work titled "The Eternal Flame of Regeneration in the Magic Forest," which utilizes a massive water tank to create an overwhelming sense of scale. Furthermore, the museum incorporates projection mapping that blends digital technology with traditional shadow art techniques, covering walls, ceilings, and floors for a truly immersive experience. Visitors can also enjoy more accessible art through Giclée prints and other reproductions in the exhibition rooms.
The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. During the bright daylight hours, you can enjoy the beautiful interplay of natural light and stained glass; on clear days, the light effects within the chapel are particularly striking.
