The Fujikura Water Source Waterworks Facilities are the site of a former water intake system (reservoir, dam, and sedimentation ponds) located in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. This facility is designated as a National Important Cultural Property (Modernization Heritage), representing a highly significant piece of Japan's modern waterworks history. Today, the area is maintained as "Fujikura Memorial Park," serving as a public space for relaxation and a way for visitors to experience the historical structures, such as the sedimentation pond ruins, amidst a beautiful natural setting. The site preserves the engineering spirit of the Meiji era through its surviving dams and iron truss bridges.
Construction of this facility began in 1903 (Meiji 36) to provide drinking water and fire protection to Akita City. Water supply began in parts in 1907 (Meiji 40), and the entire facility was completed in 1911 (Meiji 44). For approximately 70 years, it served as a vital source of drinking water for the citizens of Akita. In 1973 (Showa 48), water intake was halted as the source was switched to the Ogimachi River. In 1993 (Heisei 5), the site gained national recognition when it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property, being the first of its kind categorized as Modernization Heritage.
The park contains various structures that showcase Meiji-era engineering. Key features include the main dam (main embankment), the secondary dam, the discharge channel, an iron truss bridge, water pipes, and the now-filled sedimentation ponds. These elements are collectively designated as Important Cultural Properties. The main embankment, a gravity concrete dam, is a particularly precious site where visitors can observe the civil engineering techniques of the time firsthand. Additionally, monuments and statues marking the site as the "Birthplace of Akita City Waterworks" are installed within the park.
Fujikura Memorial Park offers different charms depending on the season. From April to May, the park becomes a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing (hanami) as the surrounding mountain cherry trees (Yamazakura) reach full bloom. Visiting during the bright daylight hours of spring allows you to enjoy the beautiful contrast between the pink blossoms and the historic stone and iron structures. Daytime visits are also ideal for observing the intricate details of the dam and the iron truss bridge.
As a well-maintained park, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the paths to observe the historical infrastructure. The park features rest areas such as gazebos (azumaya) and benches, making it a perfect place to relax in nature. Please note that certain paths between the dams may be closed due to heavy rain; it is recommended to check local conditions before your visit.
The Fujikura Water Source is located in the Yamauchi area of Akita City. The surrounding landscape is rich in nature, creating a seamless blend between the historical dam structures and the natural environment. It is an excellent destination for those looking to trace the history of the infrastructure that supported Akita's modernization.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the paths. While there is a parking area (capacity for 10 cars), please be aware that the roads and bridges leading to the park are narrow, so exercise caution if driving a large vehicle.
