The Fuji Subaru Line is a spectacular mountain driveway connecting Lake Kawaguchi to the Mt. Fuji 5th Station (elevation 2,305m). The journey takes approximately 40 minutes from Lake Kawaguchi, allowing visitors to reach high altitudes quickly. This route traverses the northern foothills of Mt. Fuji, a symbol of Japan, offering a dynamic panorama of the surrounding landscape. It is recognized as one of the "Top 100 Scenic Roads in Japan," celebrated for its exceptional views.
Before the completion of the Fuji Subaru Line, the path to the 5th Station was a rugged, unpaved trail with steep inclines and sharp curves, taking nearly three hours to traverse from Lake Kawaguchi. The opening of the modern-day paved road in 1964 revolutionized access to the mountain. The name "Subaru" refers to the Pleiades star cluster, a name chosen through a public competition, adding a touch of celestial history to this vital route for tourism and mountain climbing development.
As you ascend, the scenery shifts beautifully through various forest zones. The views evolve with the altitude, offering sweeping vistas of the Fuji Five Lakes below, as well as the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake Mountains, and the Chichibu Mountains. Along the route, you can encounter unique high-altitude vegetation and scenic spots like "Oniwa" and "Okuniwa," which feature ancient larch trees and natural landscapes shaped by the high-altitude environment.
Please note that operating hours vary significantly depending on the month. During the peak summer season (July, August, and September), the road is open 24 hours to accommodate climbers. However, during the winter and other seasons, there are strict time restrictions or temporary closures. For example, in January and February, the road is typically open from 9:00 to 16:00, with the last descent allowed by 17:00. It is highly recommended to check the latest schedule before your trip, as access times change based on the season.
The primary way to experience the Fuji Subaru Line is via car or bus. The greatest advantage is the ability to reach an altitude of over 2,300m without the need for heavy hiking gear or intense physical exertion. Once you reach the 5th Station, you can enjoy photography with the majestic Mt. Fuji in the background. Please note that most of the road lacks sidewalks, so walking is restricted for safety; travel by vehicle is the standard method.
Starting from the Lake Kawaguchi area, the road provides a smooth ascent toward the high-altitude scenery. The 5th Station serves as a major hub for tourists and is a starting point for many climbing routes up Mt. Fuji. From various parking areas and observation points along the route, you can enjoy expansive views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the Fuji Five Lakes.
As this road reaches altitudes above 2,000m, weather can change rapidly. Temperatures drop significantly, and sudden snow or ice can occur. If traveling in winter, carrying snow tires or tire chains is highly recommended. Dress in layers to manage temperature changes. For safety, do not attempt to walk along the road edges, as there are no sidewalks. Be aware that the road may close without notice due to weather or road conditions.
