The Former Russian Consulate is a Western-style building characterized by its striking red brick and white decorative accents, situated on a hill overlooking the Port of Hakodate. While preserving its historical essence, the building was reborn on July 12, 2025, as 'HOTEL Byakurin HAKODATE.' Operating as a small-scale luxury hotel with only six all-suite rooms, it elevates the atmosphere of the former consulate into a sophisticated, modern luxury space.
The building was originally completed in 1906 (Meiji 39) as Japan's first Russian Consulate. Following a major fire, it was rebuilt in 1908 (Meiji 41). It served as the consulate for the Russian Empire and, from 1927, for the Soviet Union. In 2021, the property was acquired by the automotive parts wholesaler, Sovereign, with the goal of preservation and revitalization. Today, it serves a new role as a premier accommodation while maintaining its value as a designated historical landscape building.
The greatest draw is the classic exterior, featuring a beautiful contrast between the red brick and white stone (or plaster) decorations. The white accents on the window frames and building corners, paired with the dark sloping roof, create an elegant and stately atmosphere. The estate consists of two main sections: the Consulate Building and the newly added Wellness Building. The Consulate Building houses the main dining room, a sushi restaurant, a bar, and a gift shop, while the Wellness Building contains the front desk, wellness space, gym, and library. Every guest room is an all-suite, allowing you to experience the intricate historical design in a highly private setting.
Located on a hill, the building is surrounded by seasonal flora that changes with the months. In winter and early spring, you can enjoy the architectural beauty against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the tranquil port scenery. During the bright daylight hours, the vivid contrast of the red brick and white trim is particularly photogenic. At night, the building takes on a romantic and dignified atmosphere when illuminated by soft lights.
As the building now operates as a hotel, experiences are centered around high-end hospitality and stays. Each room is equipped with a private sauna, cold plunge pool, and a semi-outdoor open-air bath, allowing guests to enjoy a modern wellness experience within a historic setting.
