Farm Tomita is one of Japan's most iconic lavender farms, located in Nakafurano, Hokkaido. Spanning approximately 15 hectares, the farm features a diverse variety of flowers that transform the landscape with different colors throughout the seasons. During the peak lavender blooming season, it becomes one of Hokkaido's most photogenic spots, attracting visitors from around the world. Beyond the scenery, the farm offers a multi-sensory experience through various facilities and cafes centered around the theme of botanical fragrances.
The farm has evolved by blending Hokkaido's rich natural environment with agriculture and tourism. With a long history of cultivating flowers centered on lavender, the site includes a museum that shares the history and culture of the plant. Furthermore, the architecture and design of the facilities—including elements inspired by Dutch flower designers—elevate the farm from a simple agricultural site to a space of significant aesthetic and cultural value.
The farm is divided into several areas, each offering a unique atmosphere. Notable areas include the 'Kajin no Hatake' (Garden of the Flower Person) with its sweeping views, as well as the 'Spring Colors Field' and 'Autumn Colors Field' that showcase seasonal transitions. The 'Greenhouse' allows visitors to observe various plants regardless of the season. Additionally, the farm features specialized facilities such as the 'Distillation House' for essential oils, the 'Perfume House' for fragrance-related experiences, and the 'Mori no Sha' (Forest House) which features an observation deck for a deep connection with nature.
The best time to visit depends on the season. In mid-April, you can see crocuses, followed by daffodils and tulips in May. The main attraction, the lavender bloom, begins in late June. From summer to autumn, the landscape shifts beautifully with different blooms. From mid-August, the greenhouse operations are highly recommended for plant observation. While the flowers look vibrant under bright daylight, we recommend visiting in the early morning to avoid the crowds.
Farm Tomita offers more than just visual beauty; it is a feast for the senses. At the cafe, you can enjoy exclusive menu items like 'Lavender Soft Serve Ice Cream,' 'Lavender Honey Pudding,' and 'Lavender Ramune' soda. You can also engage with the scents of nature at the fragrance corner or the 'Perfume House,' where you can explore the art of making your own scents while strolling through the fields.
The Nakafurano area is surrounded by stunning landscapes that change with the seasons. During peak periods, the temporary 'Lavender Field Station' may be established on the JR line to facilitate easier access. The surrounding area is filled with local cafes and shops where you can enjoy gourmet food made from fresh Hokkaido ingredients.
As the farm covers a vast area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Since some areas lack shade, bringing a hat and sun protection is a good idea. Regarding payment, while many facilities accept credit cards and transit IC cards, it is wise to carry some cash for smaller purchases. To protect the delicate plants and the environment, please do not enter restricted areas or pick any flowers. While English signage and menus are available, and some staff can provide basic English support, please be mindful of the local rules.
