Guide
Escahill Naruto is a scenic observation facility located within Naruto Park in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. The facility features a unique see-through glass escalator that connects the mid-section of Mt. Naruto to the summit observatory. This transparent structure allows visitors to feel immersed in the surrounding nature while ascending. From the summit observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the iconic Naruto Bridge and the swirling waters of the Naruto Strait.
Historically, visitors to this location used an outdoor lift. However, lifts can be heavily affected by weather and can be difficult for small children or elderly visitors to use comfortably. To improve accessibility and provide a more stable experience, the glass escalator was installed. Opened in April 1989, Escahill Naruto was celebrated at the time of its construction for having a vertical rise of 34 meters, making it one of the most significant escalators in Japan.

The greatest feature of Escahill Naruto is the see-through structure of the escalator, which ensures that the surrounding scenery is never obstructed. The glass walls and ceiling allow you to feel the movement of the natural environment as you rise. Once at the summit, the view of the Naruto Bridge and the strait is spectacular, and on clear days, the visibility extends to distant horizons. The design also incorporates seasonal flora along the sides of the escalator path, creating a seamless connection with nature.
Escahill Naruto offers different charms depending on the season. In spring, the area is adorned with blooming cherry blossoms, azaleas, and narcissus, providing a beautiful backdrop during your escalator ride. Summer is also a popular time to visit, coinciding with the vibrant energy of the Awa Odori festival season. Please note that operating hours are generally 08:00–17:00 in summer and 09:00–17:00 in winter. Since maintenance may cause temporary closures during the winter, it is highly recommended to check the schedule in advance.
The journey itself is a primary attraction. Ascending through the transparent space provides a sensation of floating through the landscape that is quite different from standard stairs or traditional lifts. After reaching the summit, you can relax at the nearby shop, enjoying local treats such as Kinshito-imo (sweet potato) soft-serve ice cream while soaking in the view.
Located within Naruto Park, the area is well-equipped with tourism infrastructure. For those traveling by car, it is approximately a 5-minute drive from the Naruto Kita IC, or about 15 minutes from JR Naruto Station. Parking is available at the Naruto Park paid parking lots. The area is also home to various facilities for viewing the famous Naruto whirlpools and other scenic spots.
