The Eriyama Rice Terraces are a collection of terraced fields located at an altitude of approximately 250 meters on the slopes of the Tenzan mountain range in Ogi City, Saga Prefecture. With about 600 terraced plots cascading down the hillsides, this area preserves the traditional rural landscape of Japan. The site has been officially recognized as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan' and '100 Best Rural Landscapes in Japan' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It is also designated as a 'Saga Prefecture Heritage' to be preserved for the 22nd century, symbolizing the harmony between Japan's rich natural environment and agricultural culture.
This region has a long history of rice cultivation. These terraced fields were not just built for farming, but were carefully crafted to follow the natural topography, becoming an integral part of the local cultural landscape. In 2022, the area was also recognized as a 'Connecting Rice Terrace Heritage' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The preservation of this traditional 'Satoyama' (rural landscape) is a testament to the dedicated efforts of the local community members who maintain the land for future generations.
The most spectacular sight occurs from mid-to-late September, when the 'Higanbana' (Red Spider Lilies) come into full bloom. As the rice ears turn a golden yellow, the bright red flowers bloom along the narrow paths (aze-michi), creating a breathtaking color contrast against the blue sky and golden fields. This unique combination of colors is a seasonal phenomenon that can only be experienced during this specific window. The geometric beauty of the terraced structures and the surrounding natural environment also makes it a highly photogenic location.
The most significant seasonal change is seen in September during the spider lily bloom. Many photographers and tourists visit during the second half of the month. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons: the fresh greenery of spring, the lush landscapes of summer, and the golden-and-red contrast of autumn. For the best photography and walking experience, daytime with bright sunlight is recommended, as it brings out the most vivid colors of the flowers and the sky.
Visitors primarily enjoy walking through nature and observing the landscape. In late September, the local community often hosts the 'Eriyama Higanbana Festival,' allowing visitors to experience the local culture and the subtle shifts in the seasons more deeply. For photography enthusiasts, the interplay of natural light, the golden rice fields, and the red spider lilies provides endless opportunities for stunning landscape shots.
The area around Eriyama is rich in natural beauty. Nearby, you can find the 'Eriyama Kansho Hiroba' (Eriyama Observation Plaza) and 'Eriyama Noson Park' (Eriyam Rural Park), which serve as ideal bases for resting while enjoying the view of the terraces. The landscape blends seamlessly with the surrounding mountains and natural environment.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes, as the paths may be unpaved or have uneven steps. Note that some areas are protected by wire mesh fences to prevent damage from wildlife; please respect these boundaries and stay on designated paths. While the scenery is free to view, cash may be required if you use nearby parking or facilities. English-language support is limited, so we recommend checking your route or map in advance.
