Ebi Jushichiya is a traditional summer event held around the vicinity of August 17th near JR Ebi Station in Kofu Town, Hino District, Tottori Prefecture. It is celebrated as an important ritual that conveys the local history and culture. The festival is characterized by a variety of events that illuminate the night of Kofu Town, surrounded by mountains.
The origins of this festival date back to a time when the lord of Ebi Castle (located in the former province of Hoki) opened the castle gates on the 17th night of the Obon season. It is said that the townspeople and farmers would dance through the night to pray for the repose of spirits during Obon and for a bountly harvest. This tradition has been passed down through many generations as a deeply rooted local summer event.
There are several key highlights that draw visitors to Ebi Jushichiya. One of the most striking is the 'Jushichiya' fire characters (hi-moji) that appear on the slopes of Mt. Kure. Seeing these glowing characters etched against the dark mountainside is a sight unique to this festival. Additionally, the fireworks illuminating the night sky, the lively food stall (yatai) street near the station, and traditional dances are all major highlights. These elements combine to create an unforgettable festive atmosphere.
The festival is typically held around August 17th each year. While festivities begin during the daytime, the excitement peaks at night. It is highly recommended to visit during the evening hours to witness the light-based displays, such as the fire characters, fireworks, and lantern floating (toro nagashi), which are most beautiful in the dark. To fully experience the heat and energy of a Japanese summer night, the nighttime events are the main attraction.
During the festival, visitors can observe traditional dances, sumo wrestling performances by adults, and the floating of lanterns. The food stall street in front of the station offers a chance to experience essential Japanese festival food culture. Observing the traditional movements and the stunning nocturnal landscapes is a primary way to experience this festival.
The main venue is the area around JR Ebi Station on the Hakubi Line. Since the food stalls gather around the station, the area is very easy to access. The entire town of Kofu becomes filled with vibrant energy during the festival period.
As this is an outdoor event held on a summer night, please prepare for the heat. Since you will be moving around outdoors at night, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended.
