Enhara no Fusuiryui is a breathtaking natural spring located in Enhara, Yamagata City, Gifu Prefecture. The defining feature of this site is the phenomenon of 'fusuiryui' (subsurface water), where water travels underground before emerging from between the rocks. The local geology consists of limestone, and as the water travels approximately 2 km through the underground layers, it undergoes a natural purification process, resulting in incredibly clear and beautiful water streams. The surrounding lush mountains, white rocks, and thick green moss create a unique, secluded atmosphere that feels like a hidden sanctuary.
The Enwara River, which flows through this area, is a vital part of the northern Yamagata region and serves as one of the headwaters that eventually flows into the Nagara River. For generations, the purity of the water in this region has been cherished by locals. In recent years, it has gained significant attention among photography enthusiasts and nature lovers for its mystical landscapes. The area is also recognized as one of the 'Gifu Water and Greenery Environment 100 Selections,' highlighting its importance in preserving the local natural environment.
The greatest highlight is the sight of the pure stream surging from between the rocks, framed by vibrant green moss. During the summer months (July and August), specific weather conditions can create a spectacular 'river mist' (kawagiri). When this happens, you can witness 'light rays' (kobo) piercing through the trees, creating a highly photogenic and ethereal scene that draws photographers from all over. The water is so transparent that the stones and sand at the bottom are clearly visible, allowing you to feel the raw vitality of nature up close.
For the best experience, we highly recommend visiting in the early morning during the summer (May to August). Specifically, between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM in July or August, the temperature difference between the spring water and the air makes it much more likely that you will encounter the magical river mist and light rays. While the area serves as a refreshing escape from the summer heat due to the lower ambient temperature, please note that the spring water remains extremely cold even in midsummer; use caution if you intend to approach the water.
Visitors can enjoy the artistry of nature with all five senses. You can take a relaxing stroll through the crisp, clean air while listening to the soothing sound of the flowing stream. Photography is a very popular activity here. However, please be mindful of your safety, as the terrain near the riverbanks can be unstable and slippery. Always prioritize safety while observing the natural scenery.
