Eisanji is a historic temple located in Nara Prefecture. Its most significant feature is the Hakkakudo (Octagonal Hall), which is designated as a National Treasure. This architectural masterpiece serves as a precious relic that evokes the atmosphere of the Nara period and stands as the symbol of the temple. Additionally, the primary deity, the Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) statue, is an Important Cultural Property, creating a profound and quiet space for prayer and meditation.
The temple is said to have been founded in 719 (the 3rd year of the Yoro era) by Fujiwara no Takechi Maro. Throughout the centuries, it has been a center of local faith. The architecture and Buddhist statues are invaluable assets that preserve the culture of the Nara period, and they are carefully protected as significant historical legacies.
The greatest attraction is the Hakkakudo, a National Treasure. Its unique octagonal shape demonstrates traditional Japanese architectural styles. Furthermore, the inner sanctuary of the main hall houses the Important Cultural Property Yakushi Nyorai. On specific viewing days, visitors have the rare opportunity to enter and worship inside the main hall, which is usually closed to the public. During certain periods, special limited-edition Goshuin (temple stamps) are also available.
There are precious opportunities in May during specific days when the special viewing of the main hall's interior is held. The temple grounds also change its expression with the seasons, making it an ideal place to spend a quiet, contemplative time. During the bright daylight hours, you can closely observe the beautiful and intricate structure of the Hakkakudo.
Visitors can experience Gofuraku (prayer/ritual) at the main hall, a ceremony to pray for family safety and the fulfillment of wishes. The temple also offers guidance for Shakyo (sutra copying), allowing you to focus your mind and connect with traditional Japanese culture. Additionally, special experiences such as receiving limited-edition Goshuin are available during certain seasons.
The area surrounding Eisanj-ji is a tranquil environment typical of Nara. It is a region dotted with historical temples, allowing you to feel the deep historical atmosphere of Nara through a peaceful stroll around the neighborhood.
When visiting, please respect the quiet and sacred environment of the temple. We recommend carrying cash (Japanese Yen) for offerings (Osaisen), Goshuin, and special viewing fees. If you wish to participate in specific rituals or ceremonies, it is advisable to check the details in advance. Please wear modest clothing that is not overly revealing, suitable for a temple visit. Regarding photography, there are restrictions in the main hall and certain areas; please follow the local instructions and signs on-site.
