Eikan-do (Zenrin-ji) is the head temple of the Saizan Zenrin-ji school of the Jodo sect, located in the Sakyo Ward of Kyoto. Known by its mountain name Shoju Raigo-san, the temple enshrines the Amida Nyorai (specifically the 'Mikaeri Amida' or 'Looking-Back Amida'). It is widely celebrated as a premier destination for autumn foliage, earning the reputation that 'Autumn belongs to Eikan-do.' Beyond its natural beauty, the temple has a profound intellectual history; it was once one of the three Kanguin (centers of learning) in Kyoto, serving as a significant site for academic and philosophical discourse.
The temple has functioned as a vital center for scholarship throughout its history. As the head temple of the Jodo sect, it has played a dual role in fostering devotion to Amida Nyorai while contributing to the development of academic study. The greatest draw of Eikan-do is the ever-changing scenery of its landscapes. The autumn foliage season attracts crowds from around the world. Additionally, during the special night-time illumination periods, visitors can experience a completely different, ethereal atmosphere. Observing the harmony between the historic temple structures and the surrounding natural elements, while paying respects to the Mikaeri Amida, is a quintessential Kyoto experience.
The peak season is from October to November, when the autumn colors are most vibrant. Please be prepared for significant crowds during this time. If you wish to see the evening illuminations, it is highly recommended to check the official information in advance, as the schedule and viewing experience change depending on the period. The atmosphere during the bright daylight hours is vastly different from the mystical night-time illuminations.
Visitors can experience a sense of tranquility and the shifting seasons at Eikan-do. The colorful scenery during the autumn season and the light-up events are particularly spectacular. For photographers, please note that lighting can be low during evening events; using a camera with high ISO capabilities or a bright lens is recommended. However, please adhere to all site rules regarding equipment.
The area around Eikan-do is rich with other historical temples and sightseeing spots. Nearby landmarks such as Nanzen-ji and Honen-in are easily accessible via bus or walking. You can easily plan a scenic route that explores the historical and cultural essence of Kyoto.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your visit. If you plan to attend a night-time illumination event, please be cautious when moving in dark areas. Note that the use of tripods and monopods is strictly prohibited, so please plan your photography accordingly. As the site can become very crowded, we suggest building plenty of time into your daily schedule.
