Edoya Yokocho is a historic area in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, that preserves the atmosphere of an Edo-period castle town. Located outside the outer moat of the former Hagi Castle, this area was once home to the residences of middle- and lower-ranking samurai. Today, the district maintains a well-preserved, orderly grid pattern. The greatest charm lies in the tranquil and evocative scenery created by the continuous black wooden fences (kurobanbei). The name "Edoya" is passed down from the prosperous merchants who once lined these streets. It is a perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and fully immerse yourself in the soulful landscapes shaped by Japanese history.
The history of this area is deeply intertwined with the formation of the Hagi castle town. During the Edo period, samurai residences were positioned around the castle, while merchant houses played a vital role in supporting the local economy. The surrounding streets, including Edoya Yokocho, derive their names from the merchant houses that once stood there. This region was also a crucial stage for the
