Echizen Ono Castle is a historic fortress located in Ono City, Fukui Prefecture. With a history dating back to the era of the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga, it has long been a symbol of the "Echizen Ono" region. The most striking feature is its breathtaking location; under certain atmospheric conditions, the castle appears to float above a sea of clouds, earning it the romantic nickname "The Castle in the Sky." From the top of the castle keep (tenshu) situated on the summit, visitors can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the charming castle town below.
The history of Ono Castle reaches back to the Sengoku (Warring States) period. It developed alongside the castle town, serving as a central hub for the region. Although many structures, including the original keep, once stood here, a massive fire known as the "Tarobei Fire" in 1775 destroyed much of the original architecture. The current keep is a reconstruction completed in 1968 through the generous donations of local residents. Although it is a modern reinforced concrete structure, the interior is rich with historical exhibits and documents regarding the successive lords of the castle, making it an essential site for understanding local history.
The fourth floor of the castle keep serves as an observation deck, offering an unobstructed view of the lush natural scenery. From the 1st to the 3rd floors, visitors can explore detailed exhibits regarding the various lords of the castle, such as the Kanamori and Doi clans, and learn about the castle's architectural history. Additionally, the site preserves many historical remains, including stone walls and moats on the summit, as well as remnants of old gates (such as the Komyo-ji gate) within the city. Walking through the town to see these historical structures and relocated gates is a highlight of any visit.
