Echizen Daibutsu (Seidai-ji Temple) is a temple of the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. Founded in 1987 by the entrepreneur Kiyoshi Tada, its most striking feature is the colossal 17-meter-tall Vairocana Buddha. This statue is modeled after the seated Buddha at the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, China, and its overwhelming scale leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. The vast temple grounds feature orderly temple buildings and a beautiful stroll garden adorned with stones and lanterns gathered from all over Japan, creating a space of profound serenity.
The temple held its first eye-opening ceremony on May 28, 1987, and began its journey as a significant cultural and tourist site. In 2002, it was officially recognized as a religious corporation and currently operates under the Rinzai sect's Myoshin-ji school. The creation of this grand Buddha was driven by the vision of local entrepreneur Kiyoshi Tada. While the management and land ownership have undergone various transitions throughout its history, the temple continues to serve its spiritual role while welcoming travelers. In recent years, increased international marketing has led to a significant rise in the number of international visitors, marking a new chapter in its history.
The temple grounds are dotted with architecture that commands respect. Most notable is the massive five-story pagoda, one of the largest of its kind made of reinforced concrete. The main hall (Kondo), which houses the central deity, is modeled after the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji in Nara, and its scale is comparable to the Nandaimon Gate of Todai-ji. Visitors can experience the beauty of traditional Japanese temple architecture by walking through the Chumon (Middle Gate) and Nandaimon (South Gate). Additionally, the stroll garden offers a harmonious landscape where nature and architecture meet, featuring diverse stones and lanterns collected from across the country.

The area around the temple is home to other famous spots, such as the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. During peak seasons, the temple's parking lot may be opened for museum visitors, and shuttle buses sometimes run between the two locations, making it easy to plan a combined sightseeing trip. Katsuyama City itself maintains a charming, historical atmosphere.
