Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Contemporary Museum MonET (MonET) is a central hub for the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale" located in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture. This facility showcases artworks that reflect the unique characteristics of the local landscape and culture. The exhibited works are designed to interact with the changing time and space of their surroundings. Beyond the contemporary art displays, the facility features one of the region's largest museum shops and a seasonal cafe, providing a space where art, local specialties, and nature become one.
The facility originally opened in 2003 as the "Echigo-Tsumari Kulture Kinare." At that time, it served as a hub for local products and tourism, featuring a corridor building with an open atrium and a hot spring wing. The name "Kinare" is derived from a local dialect meaning both "Please come in" and "Please wear this." In 2012, following a renovation designed by renowned architect Hiroshi Hara, it became the "Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Contemporary Museum Kinare." In 2021, after another large-scale renovation, it was reborn as its current name, "Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Contemporary Museum MonET."
The museum's greatest highlight is its permanent collection of diverse contemporary works. Pieces by world-renowned artists such as Yusuke Arai, Leandro Erlich, Michiko Nakatani, Kohei Nawa, and Daido Moriyama are strategically placed to resonate with the local space. Additionally, the "MonET Museum Shop" offers a wide selection of official Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale merchandise, artist-related goods, and local specialties like terraced rice, local sake, and traditional sweets. You can even purchase smaller works related to the exhibitions to take a piece of the art home with you.
The museum is typically open from 10:00 to 17:00. The operation of the attached cafe, "Salon MonET," varies by season. For example, in 2026, it is scheduled to operate on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays between April 25 and November 8. While the art exhibitions can be viewed year-round, the scenery and the way light hits the site change with the seasons, so visiting at different times of the year offers a different perspective of the works. Please note that the last admission is at 16:30, so we recommend arriving with plenty of time.
Visitors can experience a deep connection between the community and art that goes beyond simple viewing. At the museum shop, you can touch upon local culture by purchasing regional specialties such as rice, sake, and sweets. Please note that access to the shop area may require an admission fee. The architecture itself, designed by Hiroshi Hara, is an integral part of the experience, allowing you to enjoy the stunning spatial design alongside the artworks.
The museum is conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from Tokamachi Station. The surrounding area is dotted with various artworks from the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, making it an ideal spot to explore art integrated into the landscape via car or public transport. It is also a manageable 40-minute drive from the "Shiozawa-Ishiuchi IC" on the Kan-etsu Expressway. The area also features hot spring facilities, allowing you to fully enjoy both art appreciation and local cultural-relaxation experiences.
To protect the artworks, photography rules may apply within the museum. Please be aware that an admission fee is required to access the shop and cafe areas. For clothing, please choose attire suitable for the season and wear comfortable walking shoes, as the museum involves much walking. Payments can be made via cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards, though please verify specific availability on-site.
