Ebino Kogen Onsen is a hot spring located in Ebino, Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Situated at a high altitude of 1,200 meters, it is one of the highest hot spring areas in Kyushu, nestled within a breathtaking landscape surrounded by three prominent peaks: Mt. Shiratori, Mt. Ebino, and Mt. Kankoku. The spring water is a bicarbonate-rich solution with a source temperature of approximately 43.2°C. While the area has a history of operating municipal open-air baths, it remains a significant site for experiencing the natural beauty of the high-altitude plateau.
The region is defined by its volcanic topography and is a vital part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. This deep connection to volcanic activity shapes both the landscape and the local hot spring culture. Although there have been periods where municipal facilities faced temporary closures due to changes in source temperature, the area continues to be recognized as a premier destination for its unique natural environment and geological significance.
The most striking feature is the dramatic scenery afforded by the 1,200m elevation. The view from the plateau, framed by the surrounding mountains, offers a sense of isolation and peace. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons: in autumn, the area is blanketed in golden silver grass (Susuki) and vibrant fall foliage, while spring and summer bring lush greenery and seasonal wildflowers, providing a refreshing escape from the lowlands.
Nature presents a different face during every visit. From the fresh greenery and blooming flowers of late spring and summer to the spectacular silver grass and autumn colors of the fall season, there is always something to see. A typical visit to enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere lasts approximately 60 minutes. Visitors are encouraged to time their trips to witness specific seasonal phenomena like the autumn colors.
The primary experience is soaking in the bicarbonate hot springs, known for their skin-friendly properties. Traditionally, these waters are associated with various health benefits, including relief for neuralgia, musculoskeletal disorders, chronic gynecological issues, rheumatism, chronic eczema, and keratosis. Relaxing in this high-altitude environment provides a holistic sense of well-being.
The area is part of the expansive Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, a major natural landmark in Kyushu. The landscape is dominated by volcanic peaks such as Mt. Ebino, Mt. Shiratori, and Mt. Kankoku. The site is accessible via local routes such as the Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectural Road No. 1 (Kobayashi-Ebino Kogen Makuen Line).
Because the location is at an altitude of 1,200m, temperatures can drop significantly compared to the lowlands. Please prepare clothing suitable for fluctuating weather and cooler mountain air.
