Jokyo is a magnificent canyon spanning the prefectures of Wakayama, Nara, and Mie. The specific area known as "Joha-cho" is particularly famous for its deep waters—sometimes exceeding 20 meters—and the dramatic scenery of sheer cliffs alongside a gentle river. This unique landscape was formed over eons as rocks hardened by volcanic heat were eroded by water. Designated as a Special Protection Zone within a National Park and a National Scenic Spot, the area showcases the incredible power of natural geological formation.
The geology of this region is highly significant. The deep valleys were carved out through the long-term erosion of rock structures influenced by magma. The name "Jokyo" implies a slow-moving river, while "Cho" is a unit of distance. Joha-cho refers to a distance of approximately 900 meters, a stretch that has been recognized for centuries as a masterpiece of natural sculpture. Today, the area is strictly managed as a National Park special protection zone to preserve its pristine environment.
The most striking view is looking up at the towering cliffs from the water's surface. Because the river is deep and the current is gentle, visitors can experience a dynamic perspective of the landscape from a boat. In spring, the surrounding landscape is beautifully adorned with cherry blossoms, offering a different charm each season.
