De Rijke Park is a scenic destination located in Wakamachi, Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture. The park features a prominent Dutch-style windmill, which was established in April 2009. The park is situated in an area related to the erosion control dam (De Rijke Dam) located upstream of the Oya River.
The site is deeply connected to the history of erosion control. The area features a dam built to prevent sediment runoff in the Oya River. This is based on the guidance of Johannes de Rijke, a Dutch engineer who served the Meiji government, who investigated the Yoshikawa area in 1884. The dam was implemented to manage sediment from tributaries in northern Tokushima. Today, this specific type of erosion control structure remains a unique historical landmark for the region.
The primary attractions of the park are the Dutch-inspired windmill and the seasonal botanical displays. The most spectacular sight occurs in April, when approximately 15,000 tulips are planted, creating a sea of vibrant colors. The combination of the traditional windmill and the blooming tulips offers a unique landscape found nowhere else in the area.
The most highly recommended time to visit is April. During this month, the "De Rijke Park Tulip Festival" is held, showcasing a massive bloom of tulips. While the park is accessible 24 hours a day, it is best to visit during daylight hours to fully enjoy the colors of the flowers and the silhouette of the windmill.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the park with the windmill serving as a beautiful backdrop for photography. As you walk through the well-maintained paths, you can observe the cultural influence of Dutch design through the windmill and the seasonal flower arrangements.
