The Daisho-in Hiwatari-shiki is a secret ritual of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism held twice a year at Daisho-in temple, located on the scenic island of Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. The ceremony takes place every April 15 and November 15. The highlight is the 'Hiwatari' (fire walking), where participants walk barefoot over burning cypress (hinoki) leaves. The event begins with solemn Buddhist services and builds toward the dynamic and intense fire ritual.
This ritual is deeply rooted in the traditions of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. According to legend, the ritual originated when the priest Seibo Rigen performed a fire ritual (goma) using brushwood during mountain ascetic training to drive away poisonous snakes. The fire used in the ceremony is said to be a sacred flame passed down from the 'Eternal Flame' that has been burning for over 1,200 years, dating back to when Kobo Daishi practiced on Mount Misen.
The climax of the event is the 'Hiwatari' moment, where participants walk across the glowing embers and burning cypress leaves. The procession follows a specific order: the Grand Master (Daishi), monks, Yamabushi (ascetic practitioners), devotees, and finally, the general participants, all while chanting prayers for the fulfillment of their wishes. The sight of intense flames and rising smoke creates an atmosphere of incredible energy and spiritual fervor.
The ceremony is held in conjunction with the spring 'Sanki Daigongen Spring Festival' on April 15, and the 'Autumn Festival' on November 15. The proceedings typically begin around 11:00 AM with formal Buddhist services and conclude around 3:00 PM. We recommend visiting during these specific seasonal windows to witness the unique atmosphere of the spring or autumn rituals.
Anyone wishing to participate in the ritual is welcome to do so. The schedule begins with formal services, followed by the Saitodai Goma Kyo (fire ritual) around 1:00 PM, and the actual Hiwatari-shiki (fire walking) starting around 2:00 PM. Participants share a unique spiritual experience, walking through the fire while focusing on their personal prayers and intentions.
