Daishoin is a historic temple located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The temple grounds offer a breathtaking landscape where architecture and nature exist in perfect harmony. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere characterized by the gentle sounds of birdsong and the sight of water lilies and lotus leaves floating on the serene ponds. It is a place where time seems to slow down.
The temple complex contains numerous structures of significant historical value. The main hall (Hondo) is a Buddhist hall in the 'hojo' style, which holds a storied history of reconstruction following past fires. Other structures, such as the bell tower (Shoro-mon), the kitchen (Kuri), and the study (Shoin), preserve traditional architectural styles from specific historical eras. Furthermore, the grounds serve as a significant historical site, housing the graves of seven successive lords of the Mori clan of the Hagi Domain (including Hidehisa, Tsuna-hiro, Yoshihiro, Munehiro, Haruchika, Saikatsu, and Saiko). The collection also includes cultural assets such as the wooden statue of Akodo, believed to date back to the Nanboku-cho period.

The main hall, bell tower, kitchen, and study each showcase unique architectural styles, allowing visitors to observe traditional Japanese construction techniques firsthand. The area surrounding the beautiful pond changes with the seasons, offering a vibrant display of various plants and aquatic vegetation. Daishoin offers a different visage depending on the season. The flora around the pond, such as the Korean butterbur (Kochone) and other seasonal flowers, provides a unique beauty depending on when you visit. Please note that closing times vary by season: from April to November, the temple is open until 17:00; from December to March, it closes at 16:30. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the sunlight reflecting on the pond and the lush greenery of the garden.
Visitors can immerse themselves in a quiet environment to connect with nature and history. You can observe small fish like medaka swimming in the ponds while listening to the birdsong, providing a quintessential Japanese temple experience.
