Daigo Sakura is a massive Edohigan cherry blossom tree located in Bessho, Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. Designated as a natural monument of Okayama Prefecture and selected as one of the New Japan's Top 100 Famous Trees, it possesses an overwhelming presence. Standing alone on a high plateau without any obstructions, the tree reaches toward the sky with incredible strength. The tree is approximately 18 meters tall with a trunk circumference of about 9.2 meters, making its scale truly extraordinary.
The name of this cherry blossom is rooted in a historical legend. It is said that in 1332, Emperor Go-Daigo admired this very tree while being exiled to Oki Island. This legend gave birth to the name "Daigo Sakura." Locally, it is also affectionately known as "Oozakura" (Great Cherry Blossom). Additionally, the site is famous as a filming location for the 2003 NHK Taiga drama "MUSASHI," highlighting its significant cultural value as one of Japan's representative cherry blossom spots.
The most striking feature is its solitary, majestic silhouette. Amidst the peaceful scenery of a rural mountain village, the sight of this single giant tree spreading its branches toward the heavens leaves a profound impression on all who see it. During the full bloom period in spring, the vibrant life force of the blossoms creates a stunning landscape. On certain nights, the tree is illuminated, offering a mystical and ethereal atmosphere that differs greatly from its daytime appearance.
The peak viewing season is typically from late March to early April. The beauty of the blossoms at the moment of full bloom is truly exceptional. You can enjoy the vivid colors of the petals under the bright daytime sun, or experience the magical atmosphere of the night-time illuminations. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, and the area becomes particularly lively and energetic during the height of the spring season.
Visitors can enjoy walking through the surrounding nature. During the peak season, a popular way to experience the site is the "Daigo Sakura Hiking" route. By walking approximately 3 km (about a 40-minute walk) from the vicinity of the old Bessho Elementary School, you can feel the fresh spring air and enjoy the gradual approach of the magnificent tree as you head toward your destination.
Daigo Sakura is located in the Kitafusa/Ochiai area of Maniwa City. The area is surrounded by a peaceful, rural landscape rich in nature. While visiting the cherry blossoms, you can also enjoy local eateries and facilities in the nearby Ochiai area, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Maniwa.
Payment for parking fees is primarily handled in cash. Please ensure you carry Japanese Yen.
While some signs may have limited English-language notation, basic communication is primarily in Japanese. It is recommended to use translation apps if needed.
No advance reservations are required to view the cherry blossoms.
As the site is located in a mountainous area, please wear clothing appropriate for the season. If you plan to hike, sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.
Photography of the scenery is free and encouraged. Please be considerate of other visitors and the natural environment while taking photos.
Because the tree is located on high ground, the paths from the parking area involve some slopes and uneven terrain. Please watch your step.
During the peak bloom period, roads can become extremely crowded and may be subject to one-way traffic controls. It is important to check local traffic information in advance.
