Daivitokuji is a Tendai sect temple located in the mountainous area of Mt. Ushitaki in Osawa-cho, Kishiwada City, Osaka. The temple's main deity, Daivitok Myoo, is famously depicted riding a water buffalo, a figure that preserves the history of this site as a place of ascetic training. History & Cultural Background

The history of this temple is deeply rooted in Shugendo (mountain asceticism). Legend says it was founded on Mt. Ushitaki by En no Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo. The temple's name is derived from a legend involving a monk named Keiryo from Mt. Hiei, who, while training at the "San-no-taki" waterfall, witnessed the deity Daivitok Myoo riding a water buffalo emerging from the water. Consequently, the statue of the main deity is typically depicted riding a water buffalo. The site also holds significant historical weight, as it is said that the famous Buddhist monk Kukai once practiced here. While it once practiced both Shingon and Tendai traditions, it is currently operated as a Tendai sect temple.
