COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN is a contemporary art museum nestled within the breathtaking natural environment of Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. The space is defined by a seamless integration of striking architecture, curated artworks, and the surrounding landscape, offering visitors a sense of healing and fresh inspiration. It is a one-of-a-kind cultural space where the tranquil atmosphere of the historic Yufuin hot spring area meets the cutting edge of modern art.
The name "COMICO" is derived from the comprehensive entertainment platform "comico," which provides web comics, manga, novels, and films. As part of the NH way of cultural engagement by the NHN JAPAN group, the museum was established to expand the culture established in the digital realm into a physical, offline space. Located in Yufin, an area rich in traditional Satoyama culture, the museum serves as a place to nurture new sensibilities across all generations through the medium of contemporary art.
The museum showcases works by leading contemporary artists in Japan. The architecture itself is a masterpiece, designed to harmonize perfectly with the surrounding scenery, creating a unified landscape of building, art, and nature. The exterior utilizes the traditional Japanese technique of Yakisugi (charred cedar), a design choice that elegantly complements the lush greenery of the region. Furthermore, the facility utilizes the unique characteristics of the local hot spring area to provide a comfortable and cozy environment for deep contemplation.
Visitors can enjoy the changing seasons through the lens of art throughout the year. During the bright daylight hours, you can witness the beautiful harmony between the natural light of Yufuin and the artworks. As evening approaches, the museum offers a more contemplative and silent environment for total immersion. Please note that the final admission is at 16:00, so we recommend planning your visit with plenty of time to spare.
Deepen your understanding of the art and architecture through the free multilingual audio guide available via smartphone. The guide supports English, Korean, and Chinese, allowing you to move beyond visual appreciation to a deeper auditory understanding. Taking a moment to reflect while listening to the descriptions provides a perfect escape from the bustle of daily life.
The Yufuin area, where the museum is located, is one of Japan's most renowned tourist destinations, home to numerous hot spring inns (ryokan), charming cafes, and boutique shops. After immersing yourself in art, you can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the streets of Yufuin or unwind at a nearby hot spring facility. The museum is a perfect addition to a travel route that celebrates nature and relaxation.
