Overview & Charm

Chuguji is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon Shugei sect located in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture. Historically operated as a nunnery, it is recognized as one of the Yamato Monzeki temples. The temple's most significant feature is its primary deity, the Bodhisattva Miroku Bosatsu (a National Treasure), which is celebrated as one of the world's three great smiling statues. Visitors can also witness precious cultural assets, such as the Tenjuko Mandala Embroidered Scroll (National Treasure).

History & Cultural Background

The temple is deeply connected to Prince Shotoku, who is said to have built a palace on this site for his mother, Empress Anahobe no Yamato Totomi no Iratsume, which later became the temple. It has been known as the Ikaruga Imperial Palace site. Throughout history, the temple has preserved numerous cultural treasures, including the 'Paper-made Monju Bosatsu Statue,' a rare figure made of paper dating back to the Kamakura period, designated as a Japanese Important Cultural Property.

The absolute highlight of Chuguji is the Bodhisattva Miroku Bosatsu. The statue's expression—with one leg crossed and a finger gently touching the cheek—is widely known as one of the world's three great smiling statues. Additionally, visitors can view a reproduction of the 'Tenjuko Mandala Embroidered Scroll,' which depicts the afterlife as described in ancient texts. Other notable collections include the paper-made Monju Bosatsu and various historical documents from the Nara period.

Chuguji offers a different beauty in every season. The temple is particularly beautiful during spring and autumn, when the surrounding natural scenery enhances the sense of tranquility. Please note that closing times vary by season. From March to November, the temple is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From December to February, the hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Visiting in the early afternoon is recommended for a peaceful and contemplative experience.
