Chosen-ji is a historic temple located in Honjo City, Saitama Prefecture. It is recognized as one of the 'Eastern Flower Temples' (Togoku Hana no Tera), a prestigious list of 100 temples known for their seasonal floral beauty. The temple is most famous for its 'Kotsuhata no Fuji' (Kotsuhata Wisteria), a natural monument that serves as a symbol of the temple. This legendary wisteria is estimated to be over 650 years old, offering a stunning display of color and life that changes with the seasons. The history of Chosen-ji dates back to 1474 (the Bunmei era), founded by the influential Kanto Kanrei, Uesugi Akisada. The temple also has historical ties to the second generation leader, Uesugi Kunitoshi. While the temple once boasted a much larger complex of buildings, it suffered significant damage during a mountain fire in 1842. Today, the temple remains a vital center for local faith and a dedicated site for preserving its precious natural monuments.
The greatest highlight is the 'Kotsuhata no Fuji,' a designated Natural Monument of Saitama Prefecture. According to local lore, the wisteria took root from a vine that the 19th head priest once used instead of a bundle of rope. The sheer vitality of this 650-year-old plant and the way its blossoms drape over the temple grounds is a sight that captivates all visitors. The most highly recommended time to visit Chosen-ji is from April to May, when the wisteria is in full bloom. During this period, the temple grounds are transformed into a sea of purple and white. The temple is generally open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (sometimes until 6:00 PM). We recommend visiting in the morning when it is relatively cool, or in the late afternoon to see the wisteria bathed in soft, golden light. Please note that admission fees for junior high school students and adults may change during the peak blooming season.
