Chotoku-ji is a temple widely known as a premier location for viewing the 'Okame Sakura,' a variety of cherry blossom that signals the arrival of spring in Kyoto. The most striking feature is the early-blooming cherry blossoms situated right before the temple's main gate (Sanmon). Because these blossoms bloom earlier than most other varieties, the temple serves as a symbolic herald of the beginning of spring in the region. The history of this temple dates back to 1605, during the early Edo period. It is said to have been founded by Hasegawa Muneyoshi, a lord of the Settsu province.
