Choko-ji is a historic Nichiren Buddhist temple located in Samuya City, Chiba Prefecture. The temple's most iconic feature is the spectacular weeping cherry tree (Shidarezakura), which is a designated natural monument of Samuya City. With an estimated age of over 300 years, a height of approximately 15 meters, and a trunk circumference reaching about 5 meters, this ancient tree stands as a majestic symbol of the region's natural history.

History and Cultural Background

The origins of Choko-ji date back to 1514 (the 11th year of the Eisho era) when it was originally established in what is now Nakata-cho, Chiba City. In 1669 (the 9th year of the Kanbun era), the temple was relocated to its current site in Haya, Samuya City, through the patronage of the 9th chief priest, Jisen Shonin—who hailed from Haya—and the local lord, Inoue Chugoshu Masakiyo. Today, it is widely known as Shozanyacho Choko-ji.
