The Chokai Blue Line is a spectacular driving route winding through the foothills of Mt. Chokai, spanning both Yamagata and Akita Prefectures. The route is famous for its panoramic views, including breathtaking sunsets over the Sea of Japan, vast starlit skies, and a sweeping vista of the Shonai Plain below. Visitors flock here to witness the seamless transition of seasons through ancient beech forests and the serene beauty of Lake Chokai.
The area is steeped in a history of coexistence with nature. For instance, Juroku Rakan-iwa (Sixteen Arhat Rocks) stands as a significant cultural asset, carved to pray for the safety of sailors and the souls of those lost at sea. The area also holds literary significance, featuring a monument to the writer Atsushi Mori, who deeply loved Mt. Chokai. Additionally, the history of the mountain is preserved through the 'Nonomiya' shrine area near Ohira Sanso, which maintains a connection to the mountain's past following the volcanic activity of 1975.
The route offers a variety of unforgettable spots. From the vicinity of Ohira Sanso, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the Sea of Japan and the Shonai Plain. Near Mikoshi, you can witness the pristine beauty of ancient beech forests and clear spring water. Depending on the season, you can enjoy blooming skunk cabbages, or the colorful flower paths of the Onoso district featuring cherry blossoms, azaleas, and moss phlox. At night, the route becomes a premier location for stargazing and watching the sun dip below the horizon.
The landscape changes dramatically with each season. In spring (early to late April), look for skunk cabbages, cherry blossoms, and azaleas. Summer (mid-June to mid-October) is ideal for nature observation and spotting deer in Shika Park. Autumn brings vibrant foliage, while winter (early November to late April) sees the road closed due to snow. For the best experience, aim for the golden hour to see the sunset or late evening for stargazing.
Beyond driving, the area is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Ohira Sanso serves as a base for various activities, including spring skiing, summer hiking, and autumn foliage viewing. From the mountain trails, you can enjoy views of Lake Chokai and various observation decks. Whether you are hiking, observing local wildlife, or simply enjoying a scenic drive, the changing seasons offer endless variety.
On the Yamagata side, explore Fukiura (home to Juroku Rakan-iwa), Ohira Sanso, and the Onoso district.
