The Chokai Blue Line is a scenic mountain road located spanning the prefectures of Yamagata and Akita. This route winds through the foothills of Mt. Chokai, offering breathtaking views of the majestic Sea of Japan. As your altitude increases, the view opens up to a wide panorama of the Shonai Plain and the sea below. On exceptionally clear days, you can even spot distant islands on the horizon.
While this route once operated as a toll road, it is now maintained as a free prefectural road. Mt. Chokai is recognized as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and has been revered as a sacred peak since ancient times. Driving this route allows you to feel the dynamic scale and natural beauty of this historically significant landscape up close.
The scenery along the route changes constantly depending on your elevation. The most striking viewpoints occur at higher altitudes, where the horizon of the Sea of Japan meets the sky, offering views as far as Sado Island and the Oga Peninsula. Near the 5th station of Mt. Chokai, there are observation decks that provide highly-rated, unobstructed views. The route is characterized by its winding hairpin curves, which create a sense of excitement as the landscape shifts with every turn.
The landscape undergoes dramatic changes depending on the season. From May to October, you can enjoy the lush, beautiful natural scenery. However, please note that certain sections are closed during the winter season (from early November to early April), so plan your driving carefully. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours when the boundary between the sea and the sky appears as a vivid, striking blue.
Through this drive, you can experience the shifting temperatures and scenery that come with changing altitudes. The route is designed to allow travelers to enjoy the rhythmic movement of the mountain curves. Near the base of the mountain, you will find various facilities such as mountain huts and eateries, which serve as hubs for both hikers and travelers taking a break. As a mountain road, temperatures can drop significantly as you gain altitude; we recommend bringing layers or a light jacket suitable for the season. To preserve the natural environment, please follow local etiquette by taking all trash with you. If you plan to use local facilities or shops in the area, please carry cash as many may not accept cards.
