Shounun-zan Chofuku-ji is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Otani sect, located in the historic Mamedamachi area of Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Its main hall holds immense historical significance as one of the few remaining 17th-century Shinshu Buddhist halls in the Kyushu region. In 2006, the structure was designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and in 2015, it was recognized as part of the Japan Heritage site, "The Origins of Learning and Etiquette: Early Modern Japanese Education Heritage." Beyond its architectural grandeur, the temple is renowned for its seasonal landscapes and its role in preserving traditional cultural practices.
The main hall of Chofuku-ji preserves the distinct architectural style of the early Edo period. Throughout its history, the structure has undergone several significant transformations; for instance, the installation of the Yoma-dan in 1702 and the establishment of the Yarai-no-ma in 1809 reflect changes in religious rituals and spatial layouts. These modifications serve as vital historical records of the evolution of Shinshu Buddhist architecture in Japan. Furthermore, the temple's central deity is a wooden statue of Amida Nyorai, believed to date back to the late 14th century, which has been cherished by worshippers for centuries.
