The Chofu Fireworks is a historic festival held along the banks of the Tama River in Chofu, Tokyo. With a legacy dating back to 1933, the event has a distinguished history; after a hiatus during the war, it served as the venue for the All Japan Export Promotion Fireworks Competition 14 times starting in 1954. Visitors can enjoy a massive, open-air display of grand fireworks that illuminate the night sky above the river.
The festival's roots go back to 1933. Following the post-war reconstruction, it gained prestige as the 'All Japan Export Promotion Fireworks Competition,' hosting the event 14 times. This deep-rooted tradition continues to color the skies of the Tama River, serving as a significant cultural landmark for the local community.
The highlight is the magnificent pyrotechnic show spreading across the night sky over the Tama River. There are three distinct viewing areas: the Fuda Area, the Keio Tamagawa Area, and the TUAT (Tokyo University of Technology) Grand Area. Each offers a different atmosphere. For a more comfortable experience, premium paid seats are available, offering various styles such as table seats, chair seats, or seats that include a complimentary leisure sheet.
The festival is typically held in September. The main fireworks display lasts for approximately one hour, from 18:15 to 19:15. Please note that the event status (whether it proceeds or is canceled) is announced by 10:00 AM on the day of the event via the official website and social media, depending on weather and wind conditions. While the event usually proceeds in light rain, it may be canceled in the case of severe weather.
During the festival, original merchandise is often available for purchase. You can prepare for the viewing by picking up limited-edition items such as Chofu Fireworks branded tenugui (traditional hand towels) or leisure sheets. Depending on the area and the type of paid seat you select (table, chair, or pair seats), you can enjoy the display in a variety of comfortable settings.
