Chiringashima is an uninhabited island approximately 3km in circumference, located about 800m off the coast of Tarami Cape in Ibusuki, Kagoshima. The most striking feature of this island is the sandbar that changes with the tides. During low tide, a white sandy path known as the "Chiring Road" appears, connecting the mainland to the island. The window of time to walk this path is limited, making it a rare and precious experience dictated by the natural cycle of the ocean. The surrounding waters, shifting from emerald green to deep blue, create a mesmerizing view that captivates all who visit.
The name "Chiringashima" is steeped in local history. Legend has it that the area was once thick with old pine trees; sailors passing through the waters at night would navigate by the sound of the wind rustling through the pine forest. Furthermore, because the sandbar acts as a symbolic bridge, the island is often recognized as a "matchmaking island" where connections are formed. The local community even celebrates this aspect, with the Ibusuki Junior Chamber of Commerce hosting seasonal events to celebrate human connections and community spirit.
The island features observation points where you can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean, as well as well-maintained walking paths. The process of crossing the "Chiring Road" is a unique experience in itself. The island retains its raw, natural beauty, allowing visitors to observe unique coastal geological formations. While activities like fishing or clam digging are possible, please follow local guidelines regarding the extent of exploration to ensure safety and environmental preservation.
Crucial to your visit is checking the tide tables. The sand path primarily appears between March and October, specifically during the low tides of spring tides (large tides) or mid-tides. To ensure you can walk to the island, try to arrive when the low tide duration is longest. At high tide, the path is completely submerged, leaving the island isolated. Since the clarity of the water and the scenery change with the seasons, we highly recommend checking a tide table in advance to plan your trip.
Enjoy nature-based activities such as fishing or exploring the shoreline. Walking the sand path offers a surreal, otherworldly feeling that is hard to find in daily life. However, please prioritize safety, as currents can become very strong near the sandbar, and the area can become dangerous during rising tides.
Chiringashima is part of the rich tourism landscape of Ibusuki. The area is famous for its unique sand baths (sunamushi), views of Mt. Kaimon, and historical sites related to the figure Atsumehime. You can easily incorporate a visit to Chiringashima into a broader Ibusuki sightseeing itinerary.
To walk the sand path, comfortable footwear such as sandals or water shoes is highly recommended. Please be mindful of the environment; for instance, be cautious of the Blue-ringed Octopus (Hyomondako), which can be found in shallow waters and is highly venomous. Do not touch any marine life.
