Chion-in is the head temple of the Jodo sect, situated at the foot of Mt. Kacho in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. Its formal name is Kacho-zan Chion-kyo-in Otani-dera. The temple grounds feature a massive complex of buildings, including the sites where Honen Shonin spread the teachings of Nembutsu. The scale of the architecture is truly striking, with many structures designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties, such as the Sanmon Gate, Miegodo Hall, and Daihojo.
Chion-in is a vital center for preserving the teachings of Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect. Most of the major buildings visible today were constructed or reconstructed during the Edo period. For example, the Sanmon Gate was erected in 1621 through the patronage of Tokugawa Hidetada, and the Miegodo Hall was rebuilt in 1639 by Tokugawa Iemitsu. The deep connection with the Tokugawa Shogunate is reflected in the grand and sophisticated architectural styles found throughout the temple grounds.
