Chinjuso is a historic architectural treasure located in Tagami Town, Minamikanbara District, Niigata Prefecture. It was constructed over approximately three and a half years starting in 1914 (Taisho 3) as a detached villa for the Tamaki family, prominent wealthy landowners in Tagami. The structure is characterized by its use of high-quality timber collected from all over Japan and incorporates elegant temple-style architectural elements. The grounds feature a beautiful stroll garden (Chisen-kaiyu-shiki), creating a seamless harmony between the historic building and the surrounding natural landscape.
The villa was built as a retreat for a wealthy landowner who once held vast territories in Niigata. The design and construction were led by Kakuhei Matsui, a master carpenter from Inami, Toyama, known for his expertise in temple architecture. The construction process was also intended to support the local economy by providing jobs to the community. Today, the building serves as a living testament to the architectural techniques and the sophisticated lifestyle of the wealthy merchant class during that era.
Visitors can observe intricate architectural details such as the 'Daimyo Entrance' and the elevated 'Oku-no-tsuma' room. The entrance is graced by an Aizu Keyaki (Japanese Zelkova) tree over 800 years old, and the flooring features elegant White Mikage stone from Ibaraki Prefecture. A central feature is the stroll garden, designed to be viewed from various perspectives within the building, emphasizing the connection between interior and exterior spaces. The changing colors of the plants and the structural elegance of the building offer a unique visual experience throughout the year.
Chinjuso offers breathtaking views that change with every season. In spring and summer, visitors can enjoy the lush greenery, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. In winter, the sight of heavy snow resting on the traditional architecture creates a striking contrast. The architecture and the natural elements are perfectly synchronized to showcase the beauty of Japan's seasonal transitions. The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
While visiting, you may request a guided tour from the staff (subject to availability) to learn more about the architectural structure and the layout of the garden. Additionally, there is a souvenir corner on-site where you can find local specialties and regional products.
