Chinen Misaki Park is a scenic coastal park located in Nanjo City, the southern part of Okinawa Island. Characterized by its protruding peninsula, the park offers an unobstructed view of the vast Pacific Ocean. From the elevated viewpoints, you can see the nearby islands of Kudaka and Komaka, which are deeply significant in Okinawan culture, and witness the mesmerizing gradient of the ocean stretching toward the horizon. The park features lush green lawns, traditional red-tiled gazebos (azumaya), and well-maintained walking paths, making it an ideal environment for a relaxing stroll while soaking in the scenery.
This area is steeped in the history and spiritual traditions of Okinawa. The surrounding region is home to Sefa-utaki, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a sacred place for natural worship. While Chinen Misaki Park itself is a developed recreational space, it remains a place of great significance, famously known as a premier spot for viewing the first sunrise of the New Year, drawing many visitors to witness the start of the year in a sacred atmosphere.
The greatest draw of the park is the panoramic view from the tip of the cape. The contrast between the deep blue sky and the shifting hues of the ocean—from emerald green to deep sapphire—creates a highly photogenic landscape. Visitors can rest in the traditional-style gazebos with red-tiled roofs, which provide a sense of local charm and shade. Walking along the designated paths allows you to feel the refreshing sea breeze and observe the unique coastal topography of the peninsula.
Chinen Misaki Park offers beautiful scenery year-round. On clear days, the silhouettes of Kudaka and Komaka Islands appear vividly against the horizon, and the water's clarity is exceptional. The park is particularly famous for the New Year's Day sunrise celebrations. During the daytime, the bright sunlight highlights the vibrant blues of the sea, while in the late afternoon, the sky transforms into a stunning palette of colors during sunset.
While there are no organized commercial activities, the park is perfect for leisure. You can enjoy photography with the vast ocean as your backdrop, relax in the gazebos, or unwind on the grassy areas. The area is also great for a contemplative walk. Nearby facilities, such as the Nanjo City Local Product Hall, offer opportunities to experience local Okinawan culture and purchase regional specialties.
Chinen Misaki Park is a key destination on the southern Okinawa sightseeing route. It is located near other major attractions, such as the World Heritage site Sefa-utaki and the beautiful Azama Sun Sun Beach. Combining these stops allows for a deeper immersion into the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the island. As an open outdoor area, it is highly recommended to bring items for sun protection, such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Since sea breezes can be strong, carrying a light jacket or shawl is also practical. Regarding payments, while the park itself is free, nearby facilities or parking may require cash or credit cards (check local signage). English-language signage is limited.
