Located at the summit of Mt. Atago, the highest point in the Hoso District of Choshi City, Chiba, the Chikyu no Maruku Mieru Oka Observatory (Observatory where the Earth looks round) offers a truly extraordinary view. As its name suggests, the rooftop observation space allows visitors to observe the gentle curve of the horizon, providing a visual confirmation of the Earth's curvature. On clear days, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view that includes the distant silhouettes of Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba, as well as the numerous wind turbines of Byobugaura—a landscape often referred to as the 'Cliffs of Dover in the East.' The fusion of the vast Pacific Ocean and the sculpted beauty of nature creates a landscape unique to this region.
This hill has long watched over the history of Sotogaura, a town that once flourished as a fishing community. Generations of fishermen stood upon this hill, gazing at the sea below—praying for bountiful catches on calm days and praying for the safe return of their families during stormy weather. The memories of a community that has lived in harmony with the harsh yet bountly sea are etched into this place. Today, it serves as a symbol of the region and a popular sightseeing spot for many to enjoy its beautiful scenery.
The primary attraction is the view from the rooftop observation deck. Seeing the horizon as a gentle curve rather than a straight line is a symbolic experience of the 'roundness of the Earth.' Additionally, the sight of the wind turbines lined up along Byobugaura creates a striking and unique landscape against the vast Pacific Ocean. The sky and sea change their expressions with the seasons and time of day, offering a different sense of wonder with every visit. On the first floor, you can find a souvenir corner featuring local specialties, while the second-floor event hall occasionally hosts seasonal exhibitions such as photography or art shows.
The best time to visit depends on what you wish to see. For a truly emotional experience, visit during sunset to see the sky and ocean bathed in golden hues. On January 1st, the observatory holds special operating hours for the first sunrise of the year. On this day, it opens at 5:30 AM, allowing visitors to witness the beautiful dawn that marks the beginning of the year. Please note that since this is an early morning session during the coldest season, thorough preparation is required. From spring to summer, the higher rate of clear skies increases the visibility of distant landmarks like Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba, making it an ideal time for panoramic viewing.
Beyond just viewing the scenery, you can engage with the local culture at the observatory. The second-floor event hall provides opportunities to learn more about local art and landscapes through various exhibitions. On the first floor, shopping for local Choshi specialties is another way to enjoy your visit. Spending a relaxing moment while gazing at the coastal scenery is a special way to escape the pace of daily life.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots where you can feel the rich nature and history of Choshi. For instance, the Inubosaki Lighthouse is another excellent option for enjoying views of the horizon. You can also travel efficiently through the area by using a common passport/pass that includes the Choshi Port Tower. The area is also perfect for a driving course, allowing you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the fishing ports and the scenic coastal landscapes.
The rooftop area can be quite windy, so please bring appropriate clothing for the season. Especially during the early morning of New Year's Day or during winter, be prepared for intense cold. Regarding payments: for entries before 7:00 AM, only cash or PayPay are accepted. We recommend checking in advance if you intend to use credit cards or other electronic money, as availability may vary by time or situation.
