Chikyu Misaki (Cape Chikyu) is a breathtaking scenic spot located in Koreinan-cho, Muroran, Hokkaido. The landscape is defined by a continuous line of dramatic cliffs approximately 100 meters high, offering a commanding view of the vast Pacific Ocean from the observation deck. It holds the prestigious distinction of being ranked #1 in the 'Top 100 Natural Landscapes of Hokkaido,' making it one of the most iconic landmarks in the Muroran area. The name is said to be derived from the Ainu word 'Chikep,' meaning cliff.
The landscape is home to the Chikiu Misaki Lighthouse, which began its service on April 1, 1920. Situated atop a cliff 130 meters above sea level, the lighthouse has long played a vital role in ensuring the safety of maritime routes. The area is also a significant site for nature lovers, serving as a nesting ground for peregrine falcons, which helps maintain the local ecological integrity. The site is a local symbol, often drawing crowds of visitors who gather to witness the first sunrise of the New Year.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean from the observation deck. On clear days, the boundary between the deep blue sea and the sky is strikingly sharp, often making the curvature of the Earth visible. The Chikiu Misaki Lighthouse, standing at the edge of the cliffs, serves as a historic monument to the region's maritime history. Additionally, visitors can find the 'Lovers' Bell' installed along the coastline, offering a romantic setting amidst the powerful natural scenery. The dynamic topography of the sheer cliffs creates a sense of awe and grandeur.
Chikyu Misaki is accessible year-round and offers a different charm in every season. The sunset period is particularly highly recommended; as the sun goes down, the sky transforms into vibrant shades of orange and pink, reflecting beautifully off the ocean surface. Many people also gather here in the early morning of New Year's Day to witness the first sunrise. Depending on the season, the clarity of the air and the color of the sea will change, providing a unique visual experience every time you visit.
The main activity is strolling around the observation area to soak in the immense scale of the ocean. The high elevation provides a sense of openness that is rare elsewhere. It is a popular spot for photography, especially for those looking to capture the dramatic coastline. For a different perspective, many visitors also enjoy viewing the coastline via cruises, which allows for an appreciation of the cliffs from the sea level.
Muroran is home to several other famous sites known as the 'Eight Views of Muroran.' These include the impressive Muroran Bridge, the scenic Muroran Port (famous for its night views), and the unique geological formations of Tokkarisho. These locations are easily accessible by car or public transportation from the Chikyu Misaki area.

■ Clothing: Because of the coastal location, it can be very windy. We highly recommend wearing windproof and warm clothing.
■ Photography: Photography is permitted from the observation deck. However, please follow local regulations regarding the use of drones.
■ Accessibility: While the paths to the observation area are well-maintained, there are some uneven surfaces and steps near the cliff edges.
■ Etiquette: To protect the natural environment, please do not pick plants and ensure you take all trash back with you.
