Chikurin-ji is a historic Buddhist temple located on Mt. Godaisan in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. Dedicated to Monju Bosatsu (the Bodhisattva of Wisdom), it has long been a site of deep devotion. The temple grounds feature a stunningly beautiful landscape garden and a treasure house, offering a quintessential glimpse into traditional Japanese aesthetics. Visitors can also engage in unique spiritual programs, such as meditation and sutra copying (shakyo) led by Buddhist monks, allowing for a profound connection with Japanese spiritual culture.
The temple was founded on Mt. Godaisan to honor the teachings of Monju Bosatsu. The central deity, Monju Bosatsu, is the embodiment of wisdom. Consequently, many visitors come to pray for academic success, mental clarity, and the attainment of wisdom. Although the temple faced periods of decline throughout history, it has been meticulously preserved and is now a vibrant center for cultural heritage and spiritual practice.
A major draw of Chikurin-ji is its exquisite landscape garden and the Treasure House. The garden offers breathtaking views that change with the seasons, while the Treasure House houses precious cultural artifacts owned by the temple. Additionally, the temple offers various prayer services (gokito) for specific wishes, such as academic success, family safety, or business prosperity. These prayers can be performed in person or requested via mail.
The temple grounds transform beautifully throughout the year. The garden is particularly stunning during the fresh greenery of spring and the vibrant autumn foliage. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the early morning to enjoy the quiet, contemplative atmosphere.
Chikurin-ji offers special programs designed to help you find inner peace away from the bustle of daily life. These include guided meditation (Susokukan) and sutra copying (Shakyo) at the Chikurin-ji Shoin. These authentic spiritual practices are led by monks and provide a deep dive into Japanese mental cultivation. Please note that these programs require a fee and should be discussed in advance via telephone.
The Mt. Godaisan area is easily accessible from Kochi City and is surrounded by rich natural beauty. You can reach the area using public transportation from JR Kochi Station. The surrounding landscape provides a peaceful backdrop for your visit, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the natural scenery of Kochi.
Please wear comfortable clothing, especially if you plan to participate in meditation or sutra copying. Payment is primarily handled in cash, though MY Yuyu Bus tickets may be used for transport.
