The Chikuma River Embankment is a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot located along the right bank of the Chikuma River in Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture. This scenic area features a magnificent 4km stretch of approximately 600 double-flowered cherry trees (yaezakura). Unlike the common single-petal Yoshino cherry, the yaezakura blossoms are much fuller and more voluminous, creating a lush, romantic atmosphere that signals the arrival of spring. A unique highlight is the color contrast found near Obuse Bridge, where the soft pink of the cherry blossoms meets the vibrant yellow of the rapeseed (nanohana) flowers blooming in the park below.
This area has a deep connection with the natural flow of the Chikuma River. Obuse Town itself is a region blessed with rich natural resources, famous for its fruit cultivation such as chestnuts and peaches. The seasonal landscapes of cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers are an essential part of the local identity, offering visitors a profound sense of the changing seasons and the traditional rhythm of life in Nagano.
The greatest attraction is the continuous 4km path of double-flowered cherry trees. The dense, multi-layered petals of the yaezakura provide a much more dramatic and colorful display than standard cherry blossoms. Additionally, the view at the foot of Obuse Bridge is breathtaking; the simultaneous blooming of pink cherry blossoms and yellow rapeseed flowers creates a stunning two-tone landscape. Depending on the timing, you may also see flowering peach trees, adding even more variety to the spring floral display.
The peak season is typically from late April to early May. Visiting during this window ensures you can witness the spectacular harmony of the pink cherry blossoms and yellow rapeseed flowers. While the scenery is beautiful under the bright daylight, we recommend bringing sun protection if you plan to stroll during the midday hours. Since the flowering timing can vary slightly each year, it is highly recommended to check the local bloom reports before your trip.
The primary activity is a relaxing stroll along the riverside promenade. The 4km path is an ideal distance for a leisurely walk while admiring the flowers and the river scenery. Since Obuse is also famous for its rich culinary culture, many visitors enjoy exploring the local food scene in the nearby town before or after their walk.
For sightseeing, it is recommended to use the parking lot at Obuse Sogo Park. Please note that it is approximately a 20-minute walk from the parking area to the Nanohana Park (near Obuse Bridge). The surrounding area is also home to the historic streets of Obuse, where you can enjoy local delicacies and famous chestnut-based sweets.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as the riverbank path may have unpaved sections or slight slopes. Regarding payments, please check in advance if the local shops or facilities accept credit cards or IC cards, as many smaller establishments may be cash-only. English support is limited in the area, so having a translation app ready is helpful. To protect the natural environment, please follow local etiquette: do not pick flowers or damage the plants during your visit.
