The Chikugogawa Shokai Bridge is a rare vertical-lift movable bridge located on the border between Okawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga City in Saga Prefecture. Originally serving as a railway bridge for the JNR Saga Line, it has been repurposed as a pedestrian walkway, allowing visitors to cross the Chik-ugo River on foot. As a designated National Important Cultural Property and a recognized piece of industrial heritage, the bridge attracts many visitors drawn to its unique engineering and historical significance.
The history of this bridge dates back to 1935. It served as a vital link for the JNR Saga Line for many decades. After its role as a railway bridge ended in 1987, it was reopened as a pedestrian path in 1996. In 2003, it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and in 2007, it received recognition as an Industrial Heritage site. The vertical-lift mechanism was specifically designed to allow ships to pass through the Chikugo River without being obstructed by the bridge structure, even during the tidal changes of the Ariake Sea.
The most striking feature is the mechanism that lifts the bridge deck up to approximately 30 meters. The movable section weighs about 48 tons, balanced by approximately 20-ton weights suspended from the steel towers on either side. The intricate system of balance wires, pulleys, and the massive steel towers showcases the advanced civil engineering techniques of the era. From the pedestrian path, you can experience the sheer scale of the historical iron towers and the flowing beauty of the Chikugo River up close.
Opening hours for the walkway vary by season. From March to November, the area is open until 21:00, and from December to February, it is open until 17:00. Additionally, the towers are illuminated after sunset until 22:00, offering a beautiful nighttime view. Please note that the actual time available for walking across to the opposite bank is strictly between 9:00 and 16:30. Since the actual lifting mechanism is not currently in operation for demonstration, we recommend checking the schedule if you wish to see the mechanics in action.
As a pedestrian walkway, the bridge offers a peaceful walk across the Chikugo River while surrounded by historical industrial architecture. The site is also a hub for cultural events, such as photography and sketching contests, reflecting its deep connection to the local community. It is an ideal spot to feel the strength of industrial heritage amidst a natural landscape.

Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you are cycling, you must dismount and push your bicycle while on the bridge; riding is not permitted. Motorbikes are strictly prohibited, and pets are not allowed on the bridge. Please be considerate of other pedestrians when taking photographs. While the path is well-maintained, the industrial structure may have uneven surfaces, so focus on your footing.
