Chikugogawa Shokaibashi is a historic vertical-lift bridge spanning the Chikugo River, connecting Okawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga City in Saga Prefecture. It originally served as a railway bridge for the JNR Saga Line. Today, it is celebrated as Japan's oldest vertical-lift bridge and is officially designated as a National Important Cultural Property and a Mechanical Heritage site. The structure stretches approximately 507 meters in length and has been repurposed as a scenic pedestrian walkway, allowing visitors to walk the path once traveled by trains. The most striking feature is the central section that rises vertically to allow large ships to pass through, a testament to the engineering ingenuity of its time.
The history of this bridge dates back to 1935 (Showa 10). It was constructed as a railway bridge for the Saga Line, with the design led by railway engineer Kugiwa Iwao and the structural mechanism devised by Sakamoto Tane Yoshi. At the time of its completion, it was hailed as one of the most impressive movable bridges in the Orient. When the Saga Line was decommissioned in 1987, there were discussions regarding its demolition; however, due to strong preservation efforts by local residents, the bridge was transferred to Okawa City in 1992. It reopened as a pedestrian walkway in 1996 and has since become a landmark of the region. Its cultural significance was officially recognized when it was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2003 and a Mechanical Heritage site by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2007.
The greatest attraction is the sight of the movable section that actually lifts vertically. While the total length is 507 meters, the movable section itself is 24.2 meters, with a vertical lift height of 23 meters. From the walkway, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the vast Chikugo River and the surrounding landscape. Additionally, the parks located at both ends of the bridge feature historical monuments, including original three-lamp signals and warning devices used during its railway-era-service, providing a tangible connection to the past.
Daytime is the best time to visit to fully appreciate the scenery of the Chikugo River. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, making it a popular spot for photography. Please note that the operation of the bridge (the lifting mechanism) may change depending on the navigation schedules of large vessels, so it is advisable to check local conditions if you wish to see it in action. The parks at either end are also excellent spots for a relaxing stroll or a break.
As a pedestrian walkway, the bridge offers the unique experience of walking over a major river on a historic structure. You can observe the massive mechanical components up close while walking the former railway tracks. At the parks on either end, you can spend a peaceful time exploring the preserved railway signals and monuments, feeling the intersection of nature and industrial history.
There are several cultural spots near Chikugogawa Shokaibashi. In the Okawa City (Fukuoka) direction, you can find a Western-style building that once served as the office for Seiriki Shuzo, which is now used as a museum. On the Saga side, the area is known for its beautiful natural landscapes that highlight the charm of the Chikugo River.
While the bridge is a well-maintained pedestrian path, it can be quite windy. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing a light windbreaker. Please be mindful of other pedestrians when taking photographs. As this is a historic site, please follow all safety rules and maintenance guidelines. There are no fees or reservations required to use the walkway.
