Chiwa-kyo (Chiwa Gorge) is a beautiful valley located in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and is officially designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument. The most striking feature of this area is the unique rock formations that give it its name. As limestone dissolves from within the tuffaceous rocks, it creates distinctive, breast-shaped stalactites hanging from the ceiling, which is the origin of the name 'Chiwa' (meaning breast-shaped rock).
In addition to the sculptural beauty shaped by nature over countless years, the area holds a deep spiritual significance. Many Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) statues are enshrined within the rock caves, creating a unique space where natural wonder and religious devotion meet. Furthermore, near the mountain summit, you will find the 'Tsutenmon'—a magnificent natural stone gate that commands attention and draws visitors to its grand presence. Visiting during bright daylight hours is best, as it allows you to clearly observe the intricate details of the stalactites and the imposing scale of the Tsutenmon gate.
Chiwa-kyo is an excellent destination for hiking and mountain climbing. If you plan to complete the loop around the gorge starting from the trailhead, expect to spend at least 2 hours. For those seeking a more serious challenge, there is a climbing route to Mt. Myojin. A round trip to the summit of Mt. Myojin takes approximately 6 hours (excluding breaks), so please ensure you have proper equipment and a well-planned itinerary. It is a rewarding experience to walk through such profound natural beauty.
The area surrounding Chiwa-kyo is rich in untouched nature. For those climbing Mt. Myojin, one option is to use the 'Mitsuse Trailhead' from the Toei Town side. The Shinshiro and Toei areas also feature various local spots where you can enjoy regional delicacies and immerse yourself in the natural environment. We recommend checking local access routes and nearby amenities in advance.
Preparation is vital due to the uneven and rugged terrain. Proper footwear, such as hiking boots or sturdy athletic shoes, is mandatory. Visiting in light clothing or sandals is extremely dangerous due to the risk of falls. Additionally, please be aware that mobile phone reception can be unreliable in certain areas; carry an offline map or a way to communicate.
