Cherry Road (also known as the Cherry Blossom Road by the Sea) is a scenic 5km-long stretch of cherry trees located along the coast of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Set against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan, the road features approximately 700 cherry trees, primarily the Somei Yoshino variety, which create a beautiful blossom tunnel during the spring season. The striking harmony between the pink blossoms and the deep blue of the ocean makes it a highly popular destination for scenic drives and leisurely strolls.
This area is well-established as a premier cherry blossom viewing spot. In 1994, it was notably selected as one of the "New Top 100 Scenic Streetscapes in Japan." The area is carefully maintained to preserve its beautiful streetscape, ensuring a seamless harmony between the natural landscape and the coastal road.
The most breathtaking view is the coastal route where the horizon of the Sea of Japan meets the cherry blossom canopy. The 5km stretch of Somei Yoshino trees creates a vibrant pink tunnel during peak bloom, offering a stunning contrast to the blue sky and sea. The ability to witness the changing expressions of the sea alongside the seasonal colors of the blossoms is the defining characteristic of this location.
The ideal time to visit is during the cherry blossom season, typically from late March to early April. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to fully appreciate the vivid contrast between the blue ocean and the pink petals. While the road is generally open, please note that access may be restricted during extreme weather conditions; it is always wise to check local conditions before your trip.
As Cherry Road is a public thoroughfare, it is perfect for a scenic drive where you can enjoy the view while moving through the landscape. You can also pull over at various parking areas or small pocket parks to stop and enjoy the scenery on foot. It is a wonderful way to experience the changing seasons in a refreshing, open coastal environment.
The area around Cherry Road is dotted with various sightseeing spots in Matsue. You can explore local traditional sweets culture, enjoy coastal views, or visit sites with deep historical significance. It is easy to combine a visit here with other natural or cultural attractions within Shimane Prefecture.
Since Cherry Road is a public road, no entrance fees or reservations are required. As the area is right by the coast, we recommend dressing for the weather and being prepared for coastal breezes. Parking is available at Sakura Park (50–60 spaces) and various small pocket parks, though these can get crowded during peak season.
