Catholic Hirosaki Church is a beautiful wooden-mortar structure designed in the Romanesque style, located in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Dedicated in 1910 (Meiji 43), the church features a distinctive spire (spirit) atop its gabled roof, lending the exterior a sense of historical weight and dignity. Designated as an "Atmospheric Building" by Hirosaki City, it is a cherished piece of local cultural heritage. The surrounding landscape, adorned with meticulously maintained pine trees and shrubs, offers a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere for visitors.
The history of Catholic mission work in Hirosaki is said to have begun in 1874 with the arrival of Father Alivier, a missionary from the Paris Foreign Missions Society. The foundation for formal activities was laid by Father Maran in 1878. The current site saw the construction of a church in 1882 under Alban Jean Faure. The existing building was constructed under the direction of Father Mondag, utilizing the expertise of Father Augé, who possessed significant architectural knowledge. The construction was carried out by Tsuneichi Yokoyama, the younger brother of Sakichi Horie, a master builder representing the Hirosaki region during the Meiji era. This building stands as a unique fusion of local craftsmanship and Western architectural styles.
The most striking features are the historic altar and the stained glass. The altar is a magnificent 8-meter-tall Gothic-style piece made of solid oak, crafted in Roermond, Netherlands, in 1866. This precious altar was specially gifted from the St. Thomas Church in Amsterdam. Additionally, the stained glass installed in 1984 expresses the history of divine salvation through light, adding vibrant colors to the sanctuary's interior. The contrast between the wooden cross-ribbed vaults, the white plaster walls, and the dark brown pillars further enhances the architectural elegance.
On clear, sunny days, the contrast between the white exterior walls and the bright blue sky creates a highly photogenic landscape.
