The Campbelltown Bird Sanctuary was established in September 1995 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Koshigaya City and Campbelltown, Australia. Spanning a total area of 5,350 square meters, the facility aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Australian wildlife. The centerpiece of the sanctuary is a massive, 3,000-square-meter birdcage where visitors can observe various Australian bird species living in an environment that closely mimics their natural habitat.
The sanctuary is rooted in the deep-seated friendship between Koshigaya City, Saitama, and Campbelltown, Australia. Through the exhibition of birds and natural environments donated from Campbelltown as part of the sister-city celebration, the facility serves as a bridge for cultural and natural exchange. It has long functioned as a precious space where the essence of the Australian wilderness can be felt right here in Japan.
The greatest draw is the experience of walking through the expansive birdcage. Here, you can observe vibrant Australian parrots such as Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Long-tailed Parrots (Rosellas), and Cockatiels. The attraction extends beyond birds; there are dedicated areas for Emus and Wallabies (including the Red-necked Wallaby), allowing you to encounter the diverse wildlife of Australia. The variety of species on display is impressive, including Diamond Firetails, Rosellas, and various types of Parrots.
You can enjoy the natural behavior of the birds throughout the seasons. The bright daylight hours are ideal for photography and observation, as the birds' colorful plumage appears most vivid under direct light. However, please note that bird activity levels may change depending on the weather and temperature, so it is highly recommended to check the local weather forecast before your visit.
As you stroll through the vast birdcage, you can observe Australian birds and wildlife from a close distance. Since the facility covers a large area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Regarding payment, please be aware that the facility does not accept credit cards or electronic money.
